Departmental Profile :

About the Department:
Established in the year 1995, the Department of Chemistry has been imparting Chemistry major and general courses to the students through its ongoing B. Sc. programmes. The academic programme of the Department is according to the curriculum designed by Gauhati University.
Besides this, the Department have been organizing Crash Course Programme for Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM)   and  M.Sc. Entrance examinations for the students of Sem-V of the department every Year. So far eight students   have cracked JAM and completed their M.Sc. from IIT, NIT etc. and some are pursuing M.Sc. after cracking JAM.   The Department also organizes different activities like seminar, workshop and other departmental activities   among the students for their all round development.

UGC Sponsored Minor Research Project completed at the Department:


1. Uptake of Pesticide and their residues by the fruits and Vegetables Grown in Assam, (India).

   Name of PI: Mr. Biswajit Nath, Asstt. Professor, Department of Chemistry.

2. Synthesis, characterization and physiochemical properties of polyester ionomer.

   Name of PI: Mr. Taznur Ahmed, Asstt. Professor, Department of Chemistry.

3. Studies on Lipid Content of Small Fishes of Kokrajhar, BTAD, Assam.

   Name of PI: Dr. Sharmistha Chakraborty, Asstt. Professor & Head, Department of Chemistry.

 

SWOC analysis of the department and Future plans of the Department:

Strength:

  1. i. Young, Dynamic, well qualified and dedicated faculty members.
  2. ii. Good student oriented research environment among the faculty members.
  3. iii. Encouragement towards various entrance exam like JAM etc. by the faculty members   result in enrollment if students in IIT’s, universities etc.
  4. iv. Availability of few Sophisticated Instruments  for carrying out research. Library facility with sufficient number of books for issue to the students according to their needs.

Weakness:

  1. i. Lack of Laboratory room and availability of Chemicals in due time.
  2. ii. Need of computer laboratory for students.
  3. iii.Poor academic and economic background of the students
  4. iv. Lack of time to carry out different research activities due to busy academic time period

Opportunities:

  1. i. Appointment procedure of faculty by Govt. of Assam due to which some of the faculty members are disappointed.
  2. ii. The teachers may start research projects in collaboration with National and International Research Institutions.
  3. iii. The teachers can pursue major research projects with financial assistants from UGC, DST, CSIR etc.
  4. iv. The department provides special coaching classes for various entrance exams like JAM etc to get admission into IIT’s and Universities.
  5. iv. Presence of Soil and Water Testing Centre at the department gives opportunity to the students for caarying out research projects and the general public for agricultural soil and potable water testing at an affordable price
  6. v. The students get experience of special classes and seminars in power point presentation by LCD projectors

Challenges:

  1. i. High cost of chemicals and apparatus.
  2. ii. Extra Efforts required for the students of poor academic background.
  3. iii. Frequent strikes and bandh called by banned organizations affects in completion of course curriculum.
  4. iv. To provide laboratory facilities to a large number students.

Future Plans of the department:

  1. i. To upgrade one of the laboratory as sophisticated research lab.
  2. ii. To develop the Soil and Water Testing Centre
  3. iii. To start newly emerging professional and job oriented courses at the department.
  4. iv. To set up a smart class room to improve the teaching learning process.
  5. v. To subscribe for National and International Journals for the benefit of teachers as well as students.
