::Department of Physics::

Departmental Profile :

              Physics, the science that studies Nature, Natural Phenomenon, matter and energy in its varied forms, has a very long history. It goes back into prehistoric times, when observation of the heavens was driven by navigational needs as well as by religious motivation. Physics proper at that time was indistinguishable from philosophy. The birth of Physics as a modern natural science is traditionally equated with the work of Galileo Galilei (1564 –1642), who is credited with putting Physics on an experimental basis, and with insisting that the comparison with the actual behaviour of nature must be the ultimate check for all concepts and theories within Physics. Among the most significant later developments were Newton’s classical mechanics in the 17th century, Maxwell’s theory of electromagnetism in the 19th century, and Einstein’s theories of special and general relativity, as well as quantum theory, in the 20th century. There are no signs of this development abating. New discoveries continue to enhance and change our understanding of the universe we live in on a daily basis. The role that Physics has played, and continues to play, in shaping our current society can hardly be overstated. All of the technological achievements that we rely on daily, from power generation, over transportation, to communication, are based on our understanding of the physical laws of nature that has been achieved within the last 400 years. In order to maintain and improve mankind’s standard of living it is imperative that we continue to study Nature and gain a better understanding of her laws.

              This department has began its functioning since 1995 along with the inception of the College. And now it is one of the premier Department of the College which provides Undergraduate Education in the subject of Physics. The Department has maintained tie up with Regional Agriculture Research Station, Gosaigaon and IMD, Pune for student related project activities and for conducting seminars workshops for teacher’s students and public awareness.

OBJECTIVE :

  • To develop keen interest in the subject of Physics and motivate students to pursue higher studies.
  • To contribute towards the popularisation of Physics.
  • To start new non- conventional courses which will help students to get employability.

The undergraduate students of B. Sc. degree will get add-on qualifications and knowledge of technical value simultaneously while pursuing their B.Sc. degree course. Students, who have done add-on courses, can get preference for jobs in Laboratory/Industries, can set up their own small scale manufacturing, processing service or marketing unit. The area of work for pass outs will be designing, manufacturing, servicing etc. of various systems involving instrumentation and will help in developing an ability towards market survey for ascertaining the availability of products and their specifications, price selection, cost estimation and report writing. The course if pursued simultaneously with Physics as the core discipline at the undergraduate will strengthen the knowledge of core discipline and help those who would like to pursue higher studies in Physics at the Post graduate level/Research.
